⚡ Double Down or Fall Behind? Grant Strategy That Moves You Forward
Published about 1 month ago • 6 min read
June 2025
What If Playing It Safe Is Actually Holding You Back?
I just read an article on marketing ROI (nerdy, I know 😄), and while it was aimed at businesses, I couldn’t stop thinking: THIS applies perfectly to nonprofits and grant strategy too.
But first, I’ll admit something that might surprise you...
There was a time when I completely understood why nonprofits cut back on strategic investments—especially consulting—during uncertain times. I mean, on paper, it seems like the logical move, right?
✅ Immediate budget relief (feels like a win!)
✅ It appears fiscally responsible (cut costs = good stewardship?)
✅ Everyone else is doing it... so shouldn’t we?
But then I started tracking what happens next. And wow. Here’s what I’ve seen—both in research and in real-life client stories:
🔕 Nonprofits that pause grant-seeking during funding droughts often miss windows of opportunity and fall behind in visibility
🚀 Organizations that keep momentum—or better yet, double down—on grant strategy and funder engagement often leap ahead of peers
💸 The “cut now, figure it out later” approach often delays growth and impact (and ironically, ends up costing more in missed funding)
Cutting your grant strategy when funding is tight is like canceling your networking meetings because you need new partnerships❗
In fact, data from the Stanford Social Innovation Review shows that organizations that invest in relationship development and fundraising infrastructure during lean times are more likely to see long-term revenue gains and mission growth. And I get it. Budget season triggers the internal nonprofit tug-of-war between the cautious steward and the strategic leader.
But here’s what I know from inside dozens of organizations: When others go quiet, being the only one knocking on funders’ doors? That’s when the magic happens. ✨ One of our clients, despite a slow year, decided to invest in a 12-month grant strategy. Six months in? They’ve secured new partnerships, elevated their visibility, and landed multi-year awards. Their theory? When everyone else paused, we stayed proactive.
So this June, I’m inviting you to ask:
👉 What if the most successful nonprofits aren’t just lucky?
👉 What if they’re the ones who kept showing up? Let’s build a grant strategy that helps you grow through uncertainty—not just wait it out.

Top 5 Mistakes Nonprofits Make in Grant Applications—and How to Avoid Them
It’s a tough reality: even the most well-meaning nonprofits sometimes miss out on funding because of avoidable mistakes. A grant proposal is more than a form—it’s a narrative, a strategy, and a promise all rolled into one. The stakes are high, but the good news is that you can avoid the common pitfalls that often lead to rejection.

Behind the Win – What Funders Really Respond To
While we wait on a few exciting decisions (🤞), let’s pull back the curtain on what made one of our past proposals a winner. A recent multi-year federal award was secured in large part because the applicant did three key things:
Aligned clearly with the funder’s mission (no copy-paste language—real alignment)
Used data strategically to demonstrate both need and capacity
Invested in strategy early—so the proposal wasn’t rushed, and relationships had time to grow

Lessons Learned: Cutting Strategy Isn’t a Cost Saver—It’s a Growth Killer
When budgets tighten and uncertainty creeps in, many nonprofits react the way most organizations do—by freezing spending on anything that feels “extra.” Often, that includes scaling back on grant-seeking efforts or pressing pause on working with consultants.
But after working with dozens of mission-driven organizations, I’ve seen the opposite strategy pay off time and time again. The organizations that double down on grant strategy and funder relationships during lean times don’t just survive—they often leap ahead.
Here are five key takeaways that can help your organization stay resilient and ready:
1. Visibility Matters More When Others Go Quiet
When the grant landscape feels competitive or uncertain, staying visible with funders is more important, not less. Continuing outreach, sharing program updates, and submitting strong proposals keeps you top-of-mind.
2. Strategic Planning During Downtime = Faster Recovery
Organizations that use slower periods to refine systems, build their grant calendar, or map multi-year strategies are ready to pounce when the next RFP drops.
Yes, hiring a grant strategist or consultant is an investment. But how much revenue is lost when your proposals are delayed, poorly aligned, or never written at all?💡 Example: One Carinci Consulting client who invested in a year-long strategy plan during a “down period” secured two multi-year awards within six months—funding they likely would’ve missed without a proactive approach.
4. Funders Notice Consistency
Funder relationships are built over time. If you show up only when you're desperate, it shows. Organizations that stay engaged—even with updates or small proposals—build trust and rapport.
Lean times can be the perfect time to pilot new programs, reframe narratives, or explore collaborative proposals. Without the pressure of a packed submission calendar, you have space to innovate.
✅ Try this: Explore Grants.gov’s Community Blog for insights on writing stronger proposals and adapting to new federal trends.
Bottom Line: Cutting grant strategy may provide momentary budget relief, but it often costs far more in missed opportunities, funder momentum, and future readiness.
Let’s use this season to get sharper, more focused, and more proactive—so your next big grant win isn’t a question of “if,” but “when.”
